Sending a Mail/Care Package

Inmates love to receive letters from their loved ones and to hear what they have been up to while they are finishing out their sentence in the Essex County Correctional Alternative Center.

You can send inmates letters, but you need to ensure that you have your return address on them as well as make sure you do not have any of the following:

  • Drawings

  • Using of Crayons

  • Stickers

  • Stamps, Envelopes, Paper

You should know that all incoming mail will be opened and checked in the mailroom of the Essex County Correctional Alternative Center prior to being given to the inmate it is officially addressed to.

The Essex County Correctional Alternative Center has the right to dispose of any mail that does not follow their guidelines.

Sending Money

Inmates may request you to deposit money onto their books for a variety of reasons. The main reason why an inmate will ask you for money is so they can purchase various items they need/want from the Essex County Correctional Alternative Center commissary or what is also known as the canteen.

The commissary sells the following items:

  • Beverages

  • Snacks

  • Clothing

  • Entertainment Items

  • Personal Hygiene Care

To deposit money into an inmate's account, the easiest way is to come down to the Essex County Correctional Alternative Center with a money order. From there they will be able to collect it and the funds will be in the inmates account within a day or two.

Phone calls

The Essex County Correctional Alternative Center is like most other county facilities in a way that they only provide inmates one way to call home. For an inmate to call home, they will have to make a collect call.

Collect calls are not always the best as they are not cost-effective, but they also cannot be received on a cell phone. For you to receive a collect call, you will need to have a landline installed in your home.

You should also remember that you, the receiver of the phone call will be the party that is in charge for paying the fee for call from the Essex County Correctional Alternative Center.

Visitation

The Essex County Correctional Alternative Center offers its inmates to receive visitors on weekdays, Mondays through Fridays. Visitors are permitted to come into the Essex County Correctional Alternative Center between the hours of 9 am to 6 pm.
